Procedures for the Face

Cosmetic surgery calls for an intimate knowledge of and a heightened intuition for symmetry and balance.  This is especially true of facial surgery as the face is usually the first of a person’s features to be noticed by others. His extraordinary aptitude for performing surgeries that require a careful hand and an artist's eye have earned Dr. Ramiro Morales a reputation for excellence. Dr. Morales performs a variety of procedures to refresh and rejuvenate the face or to target specific areas of aesthetic concern. All surgeries are performed at Same Day Surgery Center at Memorial Hospital West, a state-of-the-art facility conveniently located near our office.

Face Lift

Face lift surgery, also known as rhytidectomy, is performed to counteract the effects of sun exposure, daily stressors, and gravity on a person's face.  Dr. Ramiro Morales is known for achieving consistently remarkable results through face lift surgery. A face lift may involve one or more of the following procedures: eyelid surgery, brow lift, and neck lift.

Patient Assessment

During the initial consultation, Dr. Morales and his patient discuss the patient's goals for surgery and the procedure or procedures that will best achieve the desired results. Dr. Morales also conducts a comprehensive evaluation, taking into account the patient's skin and underlying bone structure and his or her medical history. Patients should disclose all medical information at this time, including any drugs or medications they may be taking and whether or not they smoke.

The specifics of face lift surgery will differ from patient to patient, depending on his or her facial structure, specific needs, and goals for surgery. Since a face lift may involve eyelid surgery, a brow lift, or a neck lift, the duration of the procedure as well as the techniques involved will vary between individuals.

Dr. Morales usually begins by making an incision above the hairline, following the natural line in front of the ear and behind the earlobe. After separating skin from fat and muscle, he tightens the muscle and possibly removes unwanted fat deposits. Then he repositions the skin, removing any excess. Finally, he closes the incisions and bandages the treatment area. Sometimes, Dr. Morales places a small tube behind the ear to assist in the drainage of fluids, aiding the healing process.

Dr. Morales provides a set of post-surgery instructions which patients should stringently follow to ensure a swift recovery. After face lift surgery, patients may feel some discomfort. This is temporary and can be relived using pain medication prescribed by Dr. Morales. Some bruising and swelling are normal and will subside in a few weeks. One to two days after surgery, the doctor will remove the drainage tube if one was inserted. About a week later, the stitches will be removed.
Some scarring is inevitable with any surgical procedure. However, since incisions are placed behind the hair line and follow the natural creases of the face, they will be hidden or camouflaged.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Drooping upper eyelids and baggy lower eyelids can cause eyes to appear tired and may even interfere with proper vision. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is designed to correct these problem areas. During eyelid surgery, Dr. Ramiro Morales removes deposits of fat and excess skin from the upper and lower eyelids, rejuvenating a patient's appearance and enhancing the natural beauty of his or her eyes. Eyelift surgery can be combined with other procedures for a completely refreshed appearance.

Patient Assessment

During the initial consultation, Dr. Morales completes a thorough medical evaluation. It is important for patients to disclose all required information during this time, including current medications, drugs, or supplements he or she may be taking. Ensuring the safety of his patients is Dr. Morales's top priority. After examining the patient's face and underlying musculature and bone structure, Dr. Morales will discuss the specifics of eyelid surgery with the patient, as well as the patient's goals for surgery and what he or she can expect.

An eyelift procedure usually takes around one to three hours under local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of work to be done. Dr. Morales begins the eyelift by making incisions along the natural lines of the eyelids. Then he lifts the skin, separating it from underlying fat and muscle. After removing the fat deposits that make eyes appear baggy or puffy, he trims the excess skin. This makes the area around the eye appear younger and smoother. After the incisions are closed, cold compresses will be applied to the area.

Though the results of an eyelift procedure can be spectacular, it may take several weeks for bruising and swelling to completely subside. Patients should keep their head elevated for several days after surgery and apply cold compresses to the area. They should also follow all directions given to them by Dr. Morales. It may be a week to 10 days before patients are able to return to work and two weeks or more before they may resume the use of contact lenses. During the healing process, strenuous activities should be avoided, as should alcoholic beverages.

Brow Lift

The natural aging process can leave individuals with frown lines, forehead creases, and a sagging brow. A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, minimizes these signs of aging and is often combined with an eyelift or face lift to achieve a complete rejuvenation of the face. Dr. Ramiro Morales is known for producing beautiful, natural-looking results through brow lift surgery as well as through other procedures for the face, breasts, and body.

Patient Assessment

The initial consultation gives Dr. Morales a chance to get to know his patient and find out what he or she hopes to achieve through brow lift surgery. After examining the patient's face and underlying bone structure, Dr. Morales explains his recommendations for the brow lift procedure, addressing any questions or concerns the patient may have. The doctor also conducts a complete evaluation of his patient's health. At this time, the patient should disclose all pertinent medical information, including existing medical conditions and any medications, drugs, or supplements he or she is currently taking.

The techniques used in a brow lift procedure ultimately depend upon a patient's specific needs. One option involves the creation of an incision that begins above the ears and runs across the top of the scalp. Since the incision location is behind the hairline, any resulting scar is hidden by the hair. Once the incision has been made, Dr. Morales is able to expertly raise the eyebrows to a position that complements the surrounding facial features. Excess skin is removed, and wrinkles are smoothed. Once Dr. Morales is satisfied with the new look of the patient's forehead and brow region, he closes the incision and bandages the area.

After surgery, patients should rest with their head elevated. Discomfort can be alleviated with medication prescribed by Dr. Morales. Most often, patients are able to return to their normal activities within 10 days. It is important to avoid activities that require bending, lifting, or straining, including exercise and other strenuous activities, for several weeks. Dr. Morales gives patients a set of post-surgery instructions that, when stringently adhered to, will aid in the natural healing process.

Neck Lift

A neck lift can be performed in conjunction with a face lift to completely refresh a person's appearance. A neck lift procedure can also be performed on its own to rejuvenate a neck that is sagging due to the natural aging process or dramatic weight loss.

As with any of the procedures Dr. Ramiro Morales performs, the techniques involved in neck lift surgery vary according to the patient's circumstances, including his or her bone structure and goals for surgery. Sometimes, weakened neck muscles are responsible for the effect known as the "turkey wattle." In other cases, excess fat must be removed in order to further define the neck. Often, loose skin is the culprit, causing a person to look older than he or she feels. Dr. Morales performs a comprehensive examination and consultation in order to design a personalized neck lift procedure for each patient.

Lip Augmentation

Lip augmentation is a relatively simple procedure that adds fullness to the upper lip, the lower lip, or both. This procedure may benefit patients who have lost lip volume due to the aging process, as well as patients who were simply born with lips that aren't as full as they would like. During the lip augmentation procedure, a biocompatible substance is injected into the lips. Either an injectable filler such as Restylane® or the patient's own fat can be used to add fullness to the lips.

Also known as ear pinning surgery, otoplasty is a procedure that reduces the size or prominence of the ears. Children with large or protruding ears sometimes endure ridicule from classmates through no fault of their own. Accordingly, otoplasty is one of the few cosmetic surgery procedures that are commonly performed on children as well as adults. In children over four years of age, otoplasty can help patients feel more comfortable and confident about their appearance.

During the otoplasty procedure, an incision is made at the back of the ear. A small amount of cartilage is then folded, sculpted, or removed.  After the incision is closed, a bandage is wrapped around the patient's head, protecting the ear area. Patients may return to their daily activities in around five to seven days, though activities during which the ear may be bent or otherwise handled must be avoided for at least a month.
